We have been talking about electric vehicles for a long time now, and we are getting increasingly more excited about electric vehicles as the years go by.
As a means of entertainment, electric scooters and balance boards have gained and lost the interest of youngsters over the years. The kick scooter has always been popular through the many years since it first came out.
The electric scooter or moped is a brilliant mix of entertainment and practical use. They are absolutely awesome as a way to move around and enjoy yourself, but now they are also a great way to commute and actually consider as a means of transport for all of your needs.
There are quite a few brands around today, and if it seems difficult to choose the right one for yourself, just remember that you need something that will get you from point A to point B, where A is your home and B is your workplace or the regular destination that you need to go to and from.
Once you have the basics in place, and the electric moped or scooter will be able to take you the distance that you wish to travel on a regular basis, then look for other stuff. Go in for speed, and looks and comfort.
it is always to sit and move if you have some distance to go. However. some of you may want a bit more of exercise as you travel, and then a standing scooter is a great choice.
It is all a process of simple elimination. You need this, so your choice is limited to these 5 options. You also need this so your choice comes down to 3 options. You would also like this, and your choice comes down to 2.
Now, see which one fits your budget better, and that's the one to buy.
Where to buy an electric scooter or moped from?
I think your best bet is a local store, where you can actually ride one and check it out for your particular needs. However, if you do not have access to a store, then pick it up from a good online store like Amazon or Best Buy.
Another tip is that if you have a friend who owns one, ask him or her to lend it to you for a day or two. Check out how it feels to use on your regular route. Sometimes you may need something very specific that you realize only after trying it out. What if there are many hills and slopes in your route? You will then need more power than what a regular electric scooter or moped might give you.
The classic gas powered moped has been around for very long and so have the classic gas powered scooters. Today, electric powered vehicles are making a real difference to how you commute as well as to the environment.
Electric powered mopeds and scooters have no emission and extremely low running costs. Their maintenance is also low as there are fewer moving parts. We strongly feel that if your daily commute isn't long distance, you can choose a electric moped from the many reviewed in this post, and make a real difference to how much you spend on commuting, to your comfort and convenience and towards a green sustainable future.
This?
Or this?
There is a little bit of confusion regarding electric mopeds and electric scooters. They are interchangeable, yet they can mean two totally different things. Electric mopeds are clearly two-wheeled motorbike like vehicles, that run on electrical power only. Electric scooters however can mean an electric moped or an electric scooter of the kind that you find with Bird, Lime, Skip, Scoot and Spin services popular in many US states. These are essentially kick scooters that are powered by a battery.
If you are looking for electric mopeds to choose from then just read on. If you are looking for battery powered scooters designed like kick scooters, then take a quick look at the Top 10 Best Electric Scooters that we have listed out for you.

Owner's Tip about EcoSmart Metro charging port
The cover of the charging port which is located towards the lower part of the Razor EcoSmart Metro is wrenched off by first time users and broken whereas it is to be unscrewed by twisting.
This is what the charging port cover looks like:
Remember to twist it off like a screw, and not pull it out like a plug and spoil it.
Speed and range
The Razor EcoSmart Metro has a robust 500 watt motor with extra high torque. That means you will have instant power and speed whenever you need it. Since the Metro can reach speeds of up to 18 miles per hour (29 kms per hour), you also need good brakes, and that is why it is fitted with rear disc brakes. Also it has a 36 volt rechargeable battery system that lasts for up to 40 minutes of continuous use.
Charging time is long
Since the charging time is 12 hours minimum and up to 24 hours, you should buy this electric scooter only if you have around an hour or so of total travelling planned on a daily basis. If you want to do long journeys then you will need to go for an upgraded electric moped with a bigger battery system that delivers more usage time.

Electric scooter for adults street legal – the lowdown on which electric scooters and electric mopeds are street legal and the best ones to choose from
What does a street legal electric scooter, moped or e-bike mean?
It means that you can ride the electric moped or bike without a license, registration documents and insurance, on all streets and roads, and you will not be breaking any federal regulation by doing so. Let me put a quick caveat here – in certain states the exact state law may differ as it does in New York where, as per reliable sources, you need a license for any electric bike and other documents. Therefore it will make sense for you to have a look at your specific electric bike state laws here.
The law that has been passed regarding what makes a street legal electric bike is reproduced below verbatim from the official United States Congress website.
(b) For the purpose of this section, the term `low-speed electric bicycle' means a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts (1 h.p.), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a motor while ridden by an operator who weighs 170 pounds, is less than 20 mph.
As the law states above, if your electric scooter or bike has a maximum speed of less than 20 miles per hour and it is powered by a motor of less than 750 watts (which is 1 h.p.), then it legally does not require a license or any registration documents to ride on the roads.
So if your electric scooter is street legal, then you can think of it as a bicycle, and you can ride it on any road, pathway, street or trail, and if available, in the designated cycle lane. You cannot ride it on the pavement as that is considered dangerous to pedestrians. However if you are under 12 years, there should be no problems with riding one on the pavement too. Now that you have a reasonable idea of a street legal adult electric scooter, let’s get on to finding a good one for you.
Many people want to know if the electric scooter, electric moped or e-bike they are buying is street legal, so we went and checked out the best options of electric scooters and e-bikes that are street legal today.

How does an electric scooter or moped or bike work?
Electric scooters or mopeds have been around for a very long time. Recently the electric scooter has become extremely popular and also ubiquitous in some cities due to companies like Bird and Lime who have an Uber like service using electric scooters and a mobile app.
What can be called an electric scooter?
The first thing we need to do is figure out what is meant by an electric scooter. It of course means that it is a scooter that runs purely on electric power and does not use environmentally damaging fossil fuels. However, the term electric scooter has come to mean many things today. The hoverboard is also know as a two wheel self balancing electric scooter. A Razor electric kick scooter which does not have a seat and two small wheels and a bare frame is also an electric scooter. An electric moped with a seat, bigger wheels and all the trappings of a typical motorbike is also an electric scooter or a moped. And to add to the confusion we also have electric bikes, which are essentially bicycles with an electric motor powering them fully or in an assisting mode.
Frankly you will not be wrong to call any of these electric ride-ables electric scooters, as they are all electric powered and also are two or three wheeled scooters. The hoverboard uses two electric hub motors on the two wheels, the electric moped has an electric motor usually on the rear wheel, the electric kick scooters also have electric motor powering it, and an electric bike also has a rear or front wheel, or even a mid bike electric motor powering it.
Basic concept of an electric scooter is the same
In all of these the basic concept is the same, there is a battery that sends electricity to a motor that powers the vehicle. That is at the core of the electric scooter. In fact, we can break down the main core components of an electric scooter into a motor, a battery, a controller containing the motherboard that controls the running, wheels, a frame that holds everything together, a throttle that helps accelerate and decelerate and a braking system. There are many more things besides but that may differ in different models and types pf electric scooters. For instance, a hoverboard has a gyroscope that keeps it in balance, that component is not there in any other electric scooter mentioned above. Some electric scooters will have a battery powered headlamp, a display that shows the speed, charge etc., and still others may have Bluetooth connectivity and speakers that can stream music, and a mobile App to further operate it.
The controller or main board is the brain
The component that is the brain or the main controlling part is the motherboard or main circuit board. This is where all the information is processed and the instructions are sent to different parts of the electric scooter. If you twist the throttle to increase the speed, the information will go to the controller (main board) that will instruct the battery to send enough electricity to power the motor to rotate at the speed which will give the rider and scooter the desired speed as per how much the throttle has been twisted.
If there are electric brakes in the electric scooter then the controller with the main board in side it will tell the motor to move in reverse to slow down the speed, and also turn it into a dynamo that generates electric charge to back charge up the battery. In this way the main board controls and runs the electric scooter as per the rider’s instructions and inputs.
A hub motor or mid-drive/chain drive motor – which one is better?
If you were to put all the main components together then the whole unit will function as an electric scooter. The motor of the electric scooter can essentially be of two types, a hub motor which is in the middle of either the front or the rear wheels or a chain driven or mid-drive motor which is housed towards the middle of the frame and uses the chain drive of the electric scooter to power it. The advantage of a hub motor is that it is in the center of a wheel and has minimal moving parts, maintenance and problems. The chain drive motor transfers power to the chain drive of the scooter and is independent of the wheels. The hub motor is more robust as it has fewer moving parts but the mid-drive motor is also very efficient, and delivers more power on inclines and rough terrain.
The lead acid battery or the li-ion battery
The battery of the electric scooter is rechargeable and is either a lead acid battery or a lithium ion battery. The lead-acid type of battery is heavier but cheaper, whereas the Li-ion battery is lighter but more expensive. Lead-acid is the type of battery that is there in gas cars, and the lithium ion battery is there in laptops. Since the electric scooter is charged by a rechargeable battery that cannot be too heavy or it will add too much to the weight of the scooter itself, the range is usually between 20 to 40 miles. Mostly electric scooter batteries provide around 350 to 500 watts. Which is more than enough if you plan to travel shorter distances with the electric scooter. However if you have along commute every day you will not find the electric scooter useful. Your round trip should be within 40 miles for the electric scooter to be really useful for you.
Speed, distance and charging time
The maximum speed of electric scooters is in the range of 18 to 20 miles per hour, and it usually ruins for around 40 to 50 minutes on a full charge. Charging the battery usually takes about 12 hours so it is easily done overnight. Some very new electric bikes are coming with a new kind of battery that can be charged in less than half that time, also there us a special kind of charger called the CHADeMo charger that charges the battery up to 90% within an hour too. The throttle on your handle bar is what helps you accelerate or decelerate. The throttle conveys to the main board what speed to move in, and the main board conveys to the battery how much power to send to the motor to get it moving at that speed.
Good brakes are very important
The brakes are very important as at a speed of 18 miles per hours, if you need to stop you need a good braking system. There are two kinds of brakes, the disc brakes that create friction on the wheels and stop them and the electric brakes that reverse the motor and slow down the electric scooter. A combination of the two is a good option.
All together they form a fully functioning electric moped
Now let us put it all together. The frame of the electric scooter houses all the components, and the main board is the brain that operates the electric scooter. The battery transmits electric power to the motor that moves the electric scooter. The throttle allows you to increase and decrease speed. The braking system enables you to stop the electric scooter. The wheels are what make the electric scooter mobile. The other components include the seat, the storage space, the carrier, head lamps, a display that show the speed, charge etc., a charging port, a charger for the electric bike or a removable battery that can be charged inside your home, rear lights, handle brakes or foot brakes, foot rests, indicator lamps, the deck where you place your feet and some other additional components.
The main circuit board or controller
Now lets get into a slight bit of technical stuff on how the electric scooter works. The brain of the electric scooter is the controller or the main board. So, what exactly is this main board?
Well it is essentially a circuit board with lots of small components like transistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes and such like. The sliver lines on the circuit board are the basic skeleton that connects all of these components together. It basically is a much more basic version of the motherboard that is found inside a laptop. Just for your basic information, there is usually a battery that provide the voltage for the circuit board, there are resistors that control the floe of the electricity, capacitors have electrical charge in them, diodes allow the current to pass only in one direction, blocking it in one direction etc. It essentially gets converted into a tiny computer like component that controls all the parts of an electric bike. That is why it is called a controller and the circuit board inside it is called the main board.
So, this is basically how an electric scooter works. If you understand the basic then you can ride an electric scooter better as you are aware of what the parts are and how best to take care of your electric scooter or moped.

Electric Moped Guide to buying a good one
Electric Scooter or Electric Moped
First of all let us make it clear that there is no difference between an electric moped and an electric scooter. These two terms are used interchangeably, depending on the particular brand and your location, and refer to the same electric powered two wheeled light vehicle that run on a battery and requires registration and insurance to ride on roads.
Electric Mopeds are becoming more popular worldwide
Electric mopeds are becoming more popular as they are non-polluting and the norms for gas powered bikes are becoming stricter all across. All electric powered scooters, bikes and mopeds are classified as light electric vehicles, and their popularity is rising all over the world.
It’s easy and cool to ride an electric scooter
There is an ease of using and electric scooter that is not there with any other vehicle, as it is light, easy to maneuver in small spaces and has a reasonable speed to take you pretty fast to nearby destinations. Of course you will have to opt for a car when you travel long distances but within your locality or even within the city the electric moped is the best choice of transportation as an easy and convenient mode.
No need for fuel, just charge it
That is one of the coolest things about electric scooters, you just need to charge it and its ready to go. No need to go to a gas station to fill it up, just reach an electric wall socket and using the charger of the electric moped, plug it in. Once the battery light shows green, it is charged up and ready to go. In the case of most electric scooters one charge lasts for between 10 miles to 40 miles, depending on the battery capacity and make. This is more than enough to take you to and back from nearby destinations.
What to consider when buying an electric moped
Range of the moped
This is decided solely on how you are planning to use your electric moped. If you are going to use it only for short jaunts around the neighborhood and not as a daily commute, and the roads are flat and do not have any inclines, then you can actually go in for any kind of electric scooter. In this case, a range of 10 miles will do fine. If you plan on a daily commute to a reasonable distance then go in for a slightly higher range electric moped that can take you around 30-40 miles on a full charge. If you want a very long range one to go all around town then you must opt for an electric moped that has a range of 50 or more miles per full charge.
Weight of the electric moped or scooter
This is again dependent on how you plan to use it. If you see yourself hauling your electric scooter over pavements and into houses or up the stairs then go in for a very light one that is basic in terms of the frame and could even be a standing one without a seat. If you are going to be using it mainly on the road, and parking it when not using it, then you can choose any kind of electric moped, in fact a higher range heavier one may be better.
How much power your electric moped needs
Most electric scooters and moped have a motor of around 350 watts or lower. This kind of an electric scooter will have low acceleration and will not have much power. You can use it for short journeys and if you are a younger rider or buying your first electric rideable. However for a better ride go in for electric scooters with motors of at least 500 watts. If the roads you will travel on have an incline then go in for an electric moped or scooter with at least a 750 watt motor. The power of your electric scooter is a very important consideration as electric scooters are only meant to transport as certain amount of weight. Thus you have to check carefully what amount of power your electric scooter or moped needs to have to support your weight. If you are not on the heavier side then this should not be a problem, but if you are more than 200 lbs then you have to look carefully at the load bearing capacity of the electric moped.
Hopefully these tips and points will help you to choose a better electric moped for yourself. Do put in a comment in what your experience with electric mopeds has been. How to charge an electric scooter or electric moped
Learn how to charge an electric scooter and how to ensure that you are able to keep it powered up throughout the day.
Electric scooters or mopeds are a great way of getting around. They are affordable, sustainable, are extremely convenient, come in a huge variety of styles and designs, don’t need fossil fuels and are just totally cool. Since they are electric, all of them run on electric power from a battery. This section will try and guide you about how to charge your electric moped and how to keep it sufficiently charged so that you can go about doing everything you want with it, every day.
Regular charging is important
First off, you have to always remember that your electric scooter or moped needs to charged regularly. This is the basis of having a smooth and seamless experience of using your electric moped. If you have already bought an electric moped, then you know that most electric scooters have a socket with and charging cable that has to be plugged into a wall outlet for charging the battery.
Check battery status every time
Before you set out on a ride, always check the status of your electric scooter’s battery charge. Though all electric scooters are different, the way the low charge of its battery is indicated, is more or less the same in all of them. If your electric moped is low on charge there will be a red light or a blinking red light to indicate low charge. The first thing you need to know about your electric moped is where the low battery indicator light is located. Make it a habit to look at it once before starting the electric scooter. This one habit will make it much better and easier for you to enjoy your electric scooter to the fullest. If at any time you do see this red light or blinking red light, you should immediately plug it into an electrical outlet and start charging it. Here are a few pictures of charging sockets of an electric scooter.
Watch this video for about 20 seconds to see how this electric scooter is charged.
Track your ride distance and know when to charge
When you look at electric scooters and mopeds, that are meant for travelling and not for entertainment (which means that are being used by adults for commuting and getting around, and are not kid's scooters designed more for fun) then their usual range is anywhere between 15 miles to 45 miles (25 to 70 kilometers). A very important part of your electric scooter ride is to know how far you are going to go, and then buy an electric scooter with the right range and then charge the scooter battery according to your riding distance estimate. Different electric scooters have different capacity batteries, which is what gives then different riding ranges. Typically you have batteries of around 48 volts and 20 amperes. A simple tip is to keep track of how far you want to go, and plan on when you will need to charge your electric bike.
Just plug-and-charge
The actual process of charging your electric scooter is as simple as plugging it into an electrical socket. Every electric moped comes with a charger, that has one plug on one end, that goes into a wall socket and on the other end, one that has to be plugged into the battery of the electric scooter. Most scooters have a charging port that allows the charger to directly get plugged into the battery.
You need to plug the charger into an electrical socket, and then plug in the charger into the charging port on the electric moped. When you plug it into the scooter, a light will come on which will glow red or orange. You need to keep charging the electric moped till the light turns green, which means the battery has got fully charged. One important point to keep in mind is that the light should turn green before you remove the charger. A partially charged battery will reduce the life of the battery and also impact its performance. So, always remember to charge the battery till the battery charge indicator light turns green.
Charging time varies
In most electric scooters, the time needed for a full charge is anywhere between 3 to 7 hours. You can charge your electric moped overnight but it is strongly advised to not charge it for longer than 10 to 15 hours at one stretch. Excess charging can also reduce the battery’s life span and performance. The right way to stop charging an electric moped is to first unplug the charger from the electric moped and then from the electrical wall socket.
Warning: You should only use the charger and battery that is specific to your electric scooter.
Sometimes we tend to ignore some basic safety and performance guidelines, and might be tempted to use a slightly different charger on our electric scooter. This is a very bad idea and can damage the battery and the electric scooter itself. We strongly recommend only using the right charger and battery that is recommended in the owner’s manual of the electric scooter. Read up the specifications of the charger and buy one with those exact specifications or go to the official store and buy the right charge for the electric moped. A higher voltage can short the battery and the electrical circuit of the scooter or moped.
Some basic tips for battery health and maintenance
Use the right charger with the right specifications and try to get a new one for the manufacturer
Always use the original battery or get a replacement from the manufacturer
You need to charge the battery regularly to keep it in good shape. That means you should try and charge it once a day if you use it regularly, and two three times in a month if you are not riding it, and it is in storage. Regular charging helps the battery to stay in its best performing state.
Take good care of the battery and the battery will take good care of your rides on your electric scooter.
Electric Moped FAQs
What are the advantages of an electric scooter?
Simply put, the electric scooter does not use fuel, is easier to use, more enjoyable and much cheaper to run than gas. There is no sound, no odor and it is environment friendly.
Do I get some tax rebates and subsidies if I purchase of an electric scooter?
Yes, in general a plug in electric vehicle will earn you tax credits and you might get it at a subsidised price. However, this depends on the laws of the state you are living in. Here is an excellent Government resource that will tell you what subsidies or tax rebates you can expect - https://www.energy.gov/eere/electricvehicles/electric-vehicles-tax-credits-and-other-incentives.
What kind of batteries are there in an electric scooter?
The batteries are very important and are the main component of the electric scooter. The batteries do for an electric scooter, what the fuel does in a gas powered scooter.
The batteries actually make a scooter an electric scooter.
There are two types of batteries:
1. Lead-acid batteries
Most electric scooters are equipped with lead-acid batteries. You may also find silicon batteries or lead-gel batteries. These batteries are all based on the lead-acid battery technology. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper to buy than lithium batteries, but do not last as long. Lead-acid batteries need to be replaced after about 3 years.
2. Lithium batteries
The lithium battery is a more expensive battery than the lead-acid battery (4 times more expensive), but lasts much longer. If your electric moped has lithium batteries, then you will probably never need a replacement during the lifetime of your electric moped. The lithium battery also has the advantage of being much lighter than the lead-acid battery. The lithium battery also performs better if it is cold. A lead-acid battery is up to 30% less effective at temperatures below zero.
How can I maximise the performance of my lead-acid batteries when it comes to charging?
Lead-acid batteries perform best when they are fully charged. That is why when you come home from a trip, you should immediately put the battery on charge. When you keep the lead-acid battery charged, it increases the battery’s life. Some manufacturers will also recommend that you completely discharge the lead-acid battery every once in a while to increase the life of the battery.
Are lead-acid batteries environmentally unfriendly?
While the lead acid battery does not emit any fumes or cause any pollution, the lead in the battery being a heavy metal is hazardous to the environment. That is why all lead-acid batteries once they have been used up need to e properly recycled, so that it does not cause any harm to the environment.
No lead-acid battery should be disposed off with regular waste, as it is harmful to the environment, and nor should it be left in nature, as it contains lead. There are waste recycling centers where you can dispose off your lead-acid battery or the easier way would be to return it to the manufacturer, who will accept it for recycling free of cost.
When should the batteries be replaced?
You will notice it when your batteries start to deteriorate. The amount of time that the battery stays charged will start to reduce significantly, and you may also experience problems in starting the electric moped. These are all clear indications that it is time to replace the electric moped’s batteries. The usual lifespan of a lead-acid battery is between 3 to 4 years. Lithium ion batteries however last a very long time, and should easily outlast the lifetime of your electric scooter or moped.
How should I charge my lead-acid batteries for best results?
Lead-acid batteries perform best when they are fully charged. That is why when you come home from a trip, you should immediately put the battery on charge. When you keep the lead-acid battery charged, it increases the battery’s life. Some manufacturers will also recommend that you completely discharge the lead-acid battery every once in a while to increase the life of the battery.
How far can I ride my electric moped?
The distance an electric moped can travel on a full charge varies from brand to brand and also model to model. Every electric scooter or moped comes with clear specifications regarding the range of the electric moped. However, you should know that the range given in the specifications may be in test conditions, and the full range you achieve will depend on the state of the batteries, the temperature, the weight of the rider and the type of driving (constant speed or a lot of acceleration and deceleration).
How should I charge my electric scooter?
When you buy an electric scooter, you get a charger with it. Charging the electric scooter is as simple as plugging the charger to a wall socket and into the charging port provided on the electric moped. If you want to know more details, just scroll up to the section on charging your electric moped. There it has been explained with images and clear steps.
How long does it take to charge the battery of an electric moped?
In the electric mopeds in the market today, the battery charges pretty fast, getting up to 80% of charge within 2-3 hours. However, the exact amount of time needed to fully charge a battery will be specified for each brand and model separately. Many electric mopeds require 8 hours to fully charge. Also when the battery is new the charging is lesser compared to when the battery ages.
How much does it cost to charge the scooter?
The electric moped is a very energy efficient vehicle, and its electric motor is directly connected to the rear wheel of the electric moped so no energy is wasted. As a simple ballpark, the running cost of an electric moped is about one tenth of a gas scooter. As per calculations cone by some experts, about 20 to 30 full charges cost about 1 dollar.
Does an electric scooter emit CO2?
The electric scooter emits no direct CO2 as it has an electric motor. We recommend that you charge your electric moped with green electricity, so that no CO2 emission enters the ecosystem of your electric moped.
Does an electric moped make any sound?
Most electric scooters are silent, as they have brushless hub motors. You can ride it through any natural habitat without making any sound, and without adding to any noise pollution. When driving in the city, be sure to honk so that other vehicles and people are aware of your presence.
What kind of controls do electric mopeds have, are they like normal controls?
Electric mopeds and scooters have the same controls as in most bikes and scooters. Their controls are almost identical to gas two-wheelers. The acceleration throttle is on the handle bar, and you need to twist it to increase or decrease the speed. The brakes are also like in regular bikes, and they are on the handle bar itself opposite to the throttle. Most electric mopeds have dual-disc braes that are operated through regular brake levers. The lights and indicators switches are also in the normal places. Since it is electric there are no gears, so you don't need to worry about changing gears or pressing the clutch etc. The display is usually an LCD screen which will show the speed and the battery charge and sometimes more information.
How long is the life of the battery of an electric moped?
The battery life in different electric mopeds and scooters is slightly different, but on the average the batteries last beyond the life of the electric scooter.
LiPo or Lithium Phosphate batteries used in some electric mopeds last a very long time, usually as much as 2000 charge and discharge cycles which translates to over 50,000 miles.
However with time the amount of range the fully charged battery will give will also reduce, so that aspect has to be kept in mind.
